Media Relations 101: Preparing for an Interview

Style change alert! (Well, not exactly.) Different from my more recent posts though. Although I try to keep a consistent illustration style going — it would really be more accurately stated as “consistent styles”. Here’s an editorial feature created for the June Scotsman Guide Commercial edition. The author talks about the importance of planning and strategizing for an interview. Numbers Make for a Horror Story

Here’s another illustration that was created for June’s Scotsman Guide Residential edition. After our Editor and I decided on the final direction to pursue, I once again pulled from childhood memories, of what it was like trying to solve my math homework. Story problems to be exact, usually around 1 or 2 a.m. That was a long time ago. And math has not become much easier since. So this illustration was almost a self portrait — but we had too many guys in the June illustrations. Therefore this one was changed to a female figure thankfully. Much more interesting to wrap the flowing hair around all those numbers anyway. Hope you enjoy the imagery.

I really like weaving the illustration in with the typography when it works. This example barely touches, but it still does.

Going Digital

Here’s a new editorial illustration featured in June’s Scotsman Guide Residential edition. This is one of a couple I was able to illustrate and also work on page design too. It was fun to incorporate the headline (and pull quote on the jump page) into the illustration. Although I cannot remember exactly anymore — I’m guessing I may have spent part of the day vacuuming at home before I drew the sketches for this one! Below you’ll find the primary illustration, details, how things look in-context and even a couple of the initial sketches. The in-context options include the opening spread and also the jump page. This one is a bit more simple than usual, but sometimes simple is good.
